An immersion in the masterpieces of twenty artists: Renoir, Monet, Pissarro, Signac, Derain, Vlaminck, Dufy, Chagall… From the 1880s, the Mediterranean seduced artists. Leaving Paris or the north, they meet along the coast, from Collioure to Saint-Tropez.

From May 19 to January 2

“Monet, Renoir, Chagall… Voyages en Méditerranée” offers a journey from Impressionism to modernity. This new digital exhibition reveals the link between artistic creation and the Mediterranean shores.

These artists have maintained a connection with the Mediterranean either through their origins or through their stays in the south

The digital exhibition aims to show how their artistic personalities are revealed in contact with these maritime landscapes and how pictorial modernity is invented. In about forty minutes, the visitor is carried from one artistic current to another: from Impressionism with Monet and Renoir, to Pointillism with Signac and Cross, passing through Fauvism with Camoin, Derain, Vlaminck, Marquet…

More than 500 works

The immersive exhibition also traces Bonnard and Dufy’s fascination with the Mediterranean, and finally comes to one of the greatest colourists of modern art: Chagall. The style specific to each painter is displayed: the depth of Bonnard, the carefree Dufy and the audacity of Chagall. More than 500 works, today scattered around the world, flood the Bassins de Lumières (Basins of Lights) with their dazzling colors and reveal the variations of these great artists on the Mediterranean which allowed them to express all their sensitivity.

“Yves Klein, l’infini bleu” (Short program)

In parallel with “Monet, Renoir, Chagall… Voyages en Méditerrané”, an immersive exhibition echoes this tribute to the Mediterranean. “Yves Klein, infinity blue” honours this major artist of the 20th century who wanted to turn his life into a work of art.

Originally from Nice, Yves Klein admires the Mediterranean sky and sees his first work there, the origin of his inspiration. With Yves Klein, colour takes on a spiritual and metaphysical dimension.

This ten-minute creation immerses the visitor in the artist’s works, beyond his famous blue IKB (International Klein Blue). We discover, among other things, the imprint of the body with its Anthropometries or of nature with its Cosmogonies and Planetary Reliefs.

This visual and musical creation, realized under the artistic direction of Gianfranco Iannuzzi and produced by Culturespaces, is projected onto floors and walls reaching up to 12 meters high. Bright and powerful colours fill the space, the works come alive and are recomposed line after line, giving the illusion of a shimmering sea and a sparkling sun.
